Introduction to Wind and Brass is our brand-new, small-group 2-year program designed especially for young musicians interested in exploring wind and brass instruments. Starting with the recorder as a fun and accessible first step, students will build the skills they need to confidently move on to one-to-one lessons in their chosen instrument when they’re ready.

Over the course of this two-year journey, children will:

  • Learn to play the recorder in a supportive, small-group setting (maximum 4 students)

  • Learn about a variety of wind and brass instruments

  • Develop transferable skills including breathing, articulation, fingering, and basic music reading

  • Gain ensemble playing experience from the very beginning

  • Perform once per year in a relaxed concert setting to celebrate progress and boost confidence

Pathway

Introduction to Wind and Brass gives young players a strong foundation before beginning one-to-one lessons in their chosen instrument. Taking this course first will give students the best possible start — building essential skills, developing good habits, and helping them discover the instrument that’s right for them.

Who it’s for

  • Designed for children in 1st class (ages 6–7)

  • A great follow-on for students who have completed Gateway to Music 2

  • Also open to children new to Newpark who are keen to explore wind and brass instruments

Why start here?

Learning recorder first gives students a head start with the techniques used in many wind and brass instruments. It helps them build confidence, develop good habits, and discover which instrument is the best fit for them — whether it’s flute, clarinet, trumpet, or others!
